How Does Your Idea Become A ‘Day’?

How Does Your Idea Become A ‘Day’?

Dear Friends,

We all know holidays like Christmas, Passover, Thanksgiving, and Ramadan all have religious and historical origins, but what about Mother’s Day? Or National Pineapple Day? It turns out it just takes one person with a passion to create a “Day.”

For example, a woman named Anna Jarvis started a campaign in 1905 to have a special day in honor of mothers and spent years pushing for it.  Eventually, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation to make Mother’s Day an official national holiday to take place the second Sunday of May in the United States.

Shortly thereafter, Ms. Jarvis became so disappointed at the commercialization of the holiday, with people actually buying cards, flowers, and candies to give to their mothers, that she spent the rest of her life trying to get Mother’s Day eliminated, arguing, fighting, suing, and even getting arrested for disturbing the peace at a confectioners convention. She died at age 84, penniless, in a sanitarium, with no children of her own, with her bills paid for by people connected with the floral and greeting card industries.

So it turns out Anna Jarvis had a bumpy life, mostly of her own choosing, but she left a great legacy! What about your legacy? In the spirit Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day, and Star Wars Day (May the Fourth), and all the other great May Days, we are introducing a new May holiday:

National Legacy Day.

We are officially making it May 24th, the Sunday before Memorial Day. National Legacy Day is the day you finally sit down and make sure all of your legacy documents are in order and signed, with hundreds of others who will be doing the same thing! This means reviewing your wills, trusts, health care directives, funding, passwords… and all the documents you need to button down your legacy, give you peace of mind, and make things easy for your loved ones. Let’s face it, you’re at home, near your desk and papers. Why not do something that will make you feel good. Celebrate National Legacy Day with us and celebrate your legacy!

We are sharing with you our Post-Delivery Checklists for Wills and for Trusts so you can be ready for May 24th when we collectively do this together.

What do you think, National Legacy Day? It has a nice ring to it, and my mother loves the idea! Have a wonderful weekend, and enjoy the warm sunshine, it’s good for you!

Sincerely,

Anna
